Confused about Post & Beam and Timber Frame?

Here are the main differences between the two:

Both provide the structural elements of a building.

Both can utilize traditional framing or panelized framing.

Both structures allow interior or exterior walls of your choice. (i.e. stone, stucco, drywall, wood paneling etc.)

large interior support structure

Post & Beam utilizes a full log, flattened only where wall framing or joinery is made. (see above and left)

Timber Frame utilizes timbers that are flattened on all 4 sides.

Post & Beam structures allow log components to be visible from the exterior and the interior.

Timber Frame structures traditionally allow timbers to be visible from the interior only.

Post & Beam construction is rapidly becoming the modern standard for many log buildings. This is occurring because Post & Beam construction:

  1. Allows builders and contractors to use standard framing and finishing techniques to meet local codes.
  2. Allows the home owner to easily redecorate.
  3. Eliminates dust problems found in scribed walls.
  4. Easily mixes with other forms of log construction such as scribe fit or piece-en-piece.

Sperlich Log Construction specializes in Post & Beam structures, but we can also provide log components for regular framed houses such as trusses, stairs, railings, bars, tables, etc!
